Scary Story Starter…

Filed under: Students' Work on Friday, November 4th, 2011 by | No Comments

The students have been working all week on creating a scary story.  I face them a story starter and then they planned out the rest of the story.

     The hunchbacked figure beckoned to us to follow him, and we entered the castle, our teeth chattering.  The hunchback turned and looked at us.  he laughed softly and said, “Don’t fall behind.  People have gotten lost in these hallways and starved to death before they were found..hee-hee-hee!”  He led us into a huge room where a whole tree was blazing in the fireplace.  I noticed some golden eyes glowing in the far-off corner.  “Don’t be worried, my dears,” our host assured me, “that is just Fiona and she’s not one bit hungry.  She ate an entire piglet just this morning.  At the sound of the hunchback’s voice, Fiona growled sweetly.  “I will be back shortly with some hot chocolate.  You warm yourself by the fire until I return.”  He turned sharply, and with narrowed eyes, warned us: “but do not attempt to leave this room, my dears…”

Last week we read a storm about Warren Faidley a storm chaser and photographer.  Today on MSN.com there was an article about why Warren Faidley did not chase Hurricane Irene.  There is also a link to a photo slide show of pictures Warren Faidley has taken over the years.  Check it out!

Multiplication Properties

Filed under: General Notes on Wednesday, August 31st, 2011 by | No Comments

Boy did we learn a lot in math today!  Your child should be able to explain the 4 different multiplication properties: Commutative Property, Associative Property, Distributive Property, and Identity Property.  Ask your child your child to explain the property (with excitement and gestures)!

Commutative Property:  The order of the addends or factors does not change the sum or product

Associative Property:  Changing the grouping of the addends or products does not change the sum or product.

Distributive Property:  A number can be “spread out” over addition.

Identity Property:

     * 0 is the additive identity (7+ 0 =7) adding 0 to any number does not change the number

     * 1 is the multiplicative identity (8 x 1 = 8) multiplying a number by 1 does not change the number

Study Study Study…there will be a quiz tomorrow!

Congratulations!
